Wayne Solomons

In the last Newsletter we told you all how Wayne passed Matric (2006). The end of last year (2007) he managed to secure himself a great job at a well established Logistics company, DLC Logistics in their Documentation and cold chain division. He has spread his wings and has moved out of Margarets House as well. Time to fend for himself he says! We hope to keep Wayne and Margaret’s House connected in the long run!!

LEAP SCIENCE AND MATHS SCHOOL…

Lwando is attending the LEAP School this year. LEAP represents a solution to one of South Africa's key problems; the acute shortage of skills, particularly amongst the previously disadvantaged. Their aim is to enable each student to gain access to tertiary study opportunities, to be successful in the chosen career path and to develop as a socially responsible citizen of South Africa. Our students do this by graduating from the school with a university exemption; with Science, Mathematics and English on the higher grade.

REDZEBRA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

As from this year 2008 the boys will be involved in a programme called RedZebra’s. This unique programme uses the empowering energy of interactive drumming and movement as a vehicle in the communication of information that is vital for the development of children in South Africa. The interactive process integrates individuals into a unified team while giving the children an opportunity to have fun and express themselves rhythmically and creatively. The RedZebra Youth Development curriculum can be catered to your needs while supporting your existing curriculum programs. We can custom design a workshop program based on the relevant workshop themes include:

  • Self-esteem and Self –awarenessCWS
  • Substance Use and Abuse
  • Crime and Gangsterism
  • Puberty and your body
  • Reproductive Health Issues
  • Adolescence and Relationships
  • Making Decisions about sexuality
  • Adolescence and STI’s and HIV/AIDS
  • Health & Wellness
  • Empowering Values

Fanily Host Programme

Staff at Margaret’s House worked really hard to reunite the boys with their families… Anthony Williams is currently on the Family Host Programme, this programme allows the boys to spend time with their families in their own homes.

CRAFTWORK FOR THE DEUTSCHE INTERNATIONALE SCHULE KAPSTADT OPEN DAY

For the past month or so the boys have been very busy making crafts for the German School. They will get to show case their wonderful craftwork later this year at the DEUTSCHE INTERNATIONALE SCHULE KAPSTADT Open Day which is held annually at the BMW Pavillion in the Waterfront. A BIG thank you goes out to our volunteer from Finland, Paivi Tukia who has helped the boys a great deal in achieving such wonderful work!
